Once a child departed on the train,
neither parent nor child knew how to find each
other. Others were orphans, “half orphans” and
neglected children abandoned on the city streets.
This section is dedicated to the newsboys,
bootblacks and children of the street. The newsboys
not only sold the news, they were very often a part
of the news. On the following pages, you’ll meet
“the newsboys of New York” and discover their link
to the orphan trains.
